Introduction to Metta (Loving-kindness) Meditation
Metta is a Pali word which translates into “Loving-kindness”. The Metta Meditation practice was taught by the Buddha as a way to develop altruistic, selfless love and compassion. However, the cultivation & perfection of our love is the great teaching of all traditions, and one doesn’t need to be Buddhist or even believe in any particular philosophy at all to practice this technique. For, the natural function of Metta Practice is to promote kindness and develop inclusive love mixed with wisdom.
Metta has no conditions. It doesn’t ask whether one is deserving of love & compassion. And it isn’t restricted just to friends & family – but rather it extends itself out to all beings. And when the practice succeeds it softens the heart and eliminates ill-will.
According to the Buddha’s teaching, metta meditation is of “great worldly merit,” and can lead one to full enlightenment. And if the practitioner doesn’t awaken within this lifetime, the practice is guaranteed to lead them to rebirth in the highest heavens in the lifetime to come.
I invite you all to learn about this wonderful technique. We will discuss in the depth the teaching given by the Buddha, known as the Metta Sutta, we will learn how to practice metta as a formal meditation practice or as a compliment to any practice we are already working, etc… And we will work on learning how to cultivate compassion for ourselves, other people, and the world! <3 ~ Anthony Profeta, Meditation Teacher
