In this short video the Dalai Lama explains that by concentrating on the breath we can help to change our mental state and control our emotions. If we are angry or notice that we are getting angry and then tried to meditate upon our breath, or mental state would change. Our anger would & mental state would be more calm.
Therefore, meditation is important for the Here & Now! In fact, meditation & the awareness of breath is a practice which anchors us to the present moment. It’s a way for us to see what’s really going on within us and helps us to not react in ways which might be detrimental to our mental states & happiness. In fact, here is what the Buddha had to say about a state such as anger.
“Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.” ~ Buddha
